as new york as it gets, as jersey as it gets, all in one weekend

we were definitely thinking ahead when we purchased our condo with a "spare" bedroom.  for a couple who doesn't plan to have kids for at least a few years, it seemed a bit excessive considering the area we live in.  however, it's certainly been put to good use since we moved in and got the bed set up!  we've hosted hung's friends from high school, my friends from high school, my parents, our friend who lives in brooklyn (and stayed over past the point of ridiculous nightly train schedules), and most recently my friends from college.

my friend from college texted me sometime last week and asked if we would be in town the upcoming weekend.  the conversation went something like this

"no, we won't be home, but you can stay in our apartment if you need to."
"we have 4 box seats for the yankees game, and wanted to invite you."
"well in THAT case, we'll stay home friday night then!"

with the added bonus of seeing their just-under-3-month-old baby, we were definitely glad we stayed home for another night!  hung was able to cook dinner for them, make egg sammiches for breakfast, and make scones the next morning for them too, so he was a happy man too (and, obviously, we got to see another yankees game with great seats and free food.  who can say no to that?)

the next morning we headed out for long beach island to see our jersey city friends who have a house down there.  gosh is that a cool area! nearly every home has waterfront access, with little canal-like waterways reaching through the neighborhoods in finger-like patterns.  while the weather didn't fare well on saturday, we still enjoyed staying in our cozy clothes on the porch eating junk food, reading trash magazines, and talking wedding talk.  it was like a girls weekend away, except the boys participated too (you guys are troopers with all the wedding talk :P). dinner at old causeway steak and oyster didn't disappoint, i learned that my new favorite drink is gin and grapefruit juice, and we still got to catch a few breezy hours on the beach on sunday before heading back to jersey city.

(we tried REALLY hard... but... i think we need more practice :P  next time we'll get more than 2 packs of sparklers, especially if we're going to insist on doing this after a few drinks!)

hung and i drove up through some of the beach towns on the way home.  those houses are amazing.  i could do that drive everyday!

i can't be thankful enough that we have such great friends.  for some, we might not keep in touch as much as we would like, but we can always pick up again when we do see each other.  and for others, a weekend away together is the perfect way to relax and get to know each other better.

cheers, friends!

may date: our first vacation, just the two of us

...well... not technically.  let me explain.

since the time hung and i started dating, we have traveled a lot.  but, we've never traveled alone AT ALL.  as in never ever.  we once spent the night in a hotel room together, but it was only because i was in a wedding that was too far from home.  when we went to san francisco last year, we even flew coast to coast to share a leather couch together in a 4 bedroom house with some of our closest friends (hey, we weren't going to make the pregnant one sleep on the couch!)

 photo DSC06773.jpg

this time wasn't exactly a just-the-two-of-us vacation either.  but it was for the first night.  so we'll claim this as our "first vacation together", even though it wasn't even a full 24 hours.

happy weekend, and the last of barbados

 photo photo_zpsa98677a4.jpg

it's the weekend, which means it's time to.....

party hardy
or do some holiday shopping
or be lazy and sleep in
or go to the ingrid michaelson concert tonight at webster hall in manhattan (that's us!)
or go on a date
or have a friendsgiving

whatever you do this weekend, i hope it's something fun, something that makes you smile, something that you look forward to doing.

hopefully these photos will put you in the 'weekend' mood.  on the last full day in barbados , we went on a boozy catamaran cruise with tiami catamaran cruises (unfortunately, it was just all fun and games, no rihanna, no music-video-filming)

after a day in the sun, good food, lots of booze, we decided to stay in for the night, cook our own food, and enjoy being with each other on the last night of vacation.

thanks to all of our friends for making this trip a great getaway! and again, congratulations to the happy couple !!

cheers.

barbados: bajans, haitians, caucasians, and asians, part 1

when someone invites you to a wedding in barbados, you don't just go for the wedding, you make a vacation out of it, even if it means missing thanksgiving with family for just 1 year.

first, can i take a second to say how awesome it was to NOT be connected 24/7?  though the condo unit has wifi, it didn't make it to the beach or even between condo units.  this means i only checked my instagram/twitter/facebook a few minutes each day. i need trips like this more often!!

we stayed at sapphire beach condos in the st. lawrence gap area of barbados on the southern shore.  the condo was amazing, the beach was clean, the water was blue, the sun was hot. what more could you ask for?

because we had such a large group of friends coming for the wedding, we were able to rent out multiple 3-bedroom condos to share.  mr p and i had a great time sleeping in, relaxing on the beach, enjoying the water, eating good food, staying out late singing and dancing, and exploring bridgetown.

when we first arrived it made us really wonder why we love our tiny apartment in a crowded neighborhood so much.  we certainly enjoyed the giant shower, his and her walk-in closets, king-sized bed, double sinks, and sliding doors to the waterfront balcony in the master suite. there was SO much space!! maybe we need to go on a cruise next vacation so we won't be so spoiled with giant living spaces ;)

all this was before the wedding at one of the most beautiful venues i've ever seen. stay tuned for more, i definitely have more photos ;)

cheers!

p.s. the title of this post is merely describing the ethnicities of the wedding party.  gosh i love my awesomely diverse group of friends!!!

#paradise

 photo 2013-12-021_zpsa9349dd8.jpg

that was the view from our condo in sunny Barbados. if it wasn't for my skin burning on our boozy catamaran cruise, my mind, body, and soul were all telling me it wasn't quite time to come home to working everyday, being busy all the time, and driving... gosh i hate driving in new jersey.

i guess i need to go back and read all my posts about how much i love jersey city (and the recent article on the new york post about how jersey city is becoming the next "foodie destination")

more on paradise later. i've got a day job to do...

happy monday!
cheers.

i'm ready, let's go.

 photo 2013-11-252_zps02b18538.jpg

this place might be quiet for a few days, due to something that looks like that photo above.

(thanks, jenna, for posting this photo (sans words) to facebook before  i get to paradise, while i'm still in this "feels-like-9-degrees" weather we're having up here in joisey)

we won't be celebrating thanksgiving this year, but instead celebrating the marriage of two wonderful people on a beautiful island with beautiful people surrounding us.

check back here on monday if you survive the next few days of storms, the gluttony of thanksgiving, and the insanely cold weather... i'll be sure to brighten your day with photos of our adventure.

cheers, and happy thanksgiving!
jenn

p.s. last year's thanksgiving, the year before, and friendsgiving.

sunny skies and sammiches

rainy days like this on the east coast only make me think of better places to be... like california, where it's sunny ALL THE TIME... where you can spend days like this at huntington beach.  we took a quick trip down that way before a wedding we went to a few weekends ago .

a band was playing, we walked the pier, got a delicious waffle sammich from bruxie , a cookies-n-mint-chocolate-chip ice cream sammich from the scoop on cookies , and perused the cutie lil shops in the area.

success... california, you stole my heart in 1 afternoon.

wish i could have brought that sunny-n-seventy weather back to the east coast so i can get some sun on those ghostly white legs of mine!  we're lucky if we get that in the summer, let alone all year long!

cheers.
