he vs. she: hair

when you've been together with someone for a long time, people start to say that you act the same, or you look the same, or you talk the same.  when we asked some friends at kickboxing if we looked alike or acted alike, they were speechless.  it was like crickets.  maybe that's a good thing hung and i are so different?

one thing's for sure though, we have a love of hair.  short hair, really, but since boys have short hair anyways, i'm just going to say "hair".  well.. maybe it's more than hair, it's almost the same style, except mine isn't SO short on the sides (yet?)  we even use the same products: american crew fiber and tresemme tres two hairspray

he: loves the modern combover/swoop back/clean cut look.  basically JT's newest 'do.  but... he's got asian hair insead of white boy hair, and his stylist is an amateur (me). i'm working on perfecting it.  one day he'll have the look down to a T.

she: loves the faux-hawk but doesn't have the confidence to rock it yet (outside of the house anyways).  at least she's got a good cheerleader (hung) to help her rock it one day (maybe after the wedding i'll get another cut short enough for the faux-hawk?)

so yeah.  hair is a fun thing in our house.  we're both sporting some cuts that we were afraid to try at first, but gained that extra boost of confidence once we pulled the plug.  plus, if it ended up turning out bad, it's just hair, it grows back.  we can't say the same for tattoos, though, so it's a good thing we don't have any.... yet?

cheers!

chop chop

welp, after months of saying "i need to get my hair cut" i took the plunge.
i told my stylist to cut it ALL off!

ok ok not ALL of it, it's not a buzz cut, but it was a significant chop to a pretty short pixie cut!!!

before my first pixie in november , and now!

i tried out a new salon, new stylist and i love it so far! looks like i'll be going back!! that's saying a lot considering the only person to cut my hair more than once since i've moved out here is that awesome, hair-cutting roomie of mine.  he cuts boy hair, and my hair has been pretty close to boy hair for a while, so he does a good job... i just needed a totally new look, so i went to a professional.

don't let the name fool you, blow-out  is more than blow-outs, it's a full-service hair salon (and an adorably chic one at that!)  it sits in a renovated historic horse stable, with wide-plank wood ceilings and walls and exposed brick walls, all painted in white, and features a glam style with mirrors, chandeliers, chrome, and lots of natural light.  everyone was friendly, my stylist, cha cha, assured me she loved doing pixie cuts (and does them often), and i just felt at ease and at home there (i've had enough bad haircuts that i get anxiety when i go to the salon).

prices for cuts are fairly standard (maybe even on the low end) for downtown jersey city at $60, but it's steps from the grove street PATH train so it's very convenient, even for those of you who want to try it but don't live in the neighborhood.

now I've just got to figure out corporate-office-friendly ways to wear this fun, rockstar new style!  (mohawks and extra spiky are probably not allowed, though i totally want to see the look on my boss's face if i walked in with a mohawk!!)

(hung's reaction to this look on sunday: "it.. looks... AWESOME!!!" i'm glad i have a boyfriend that fully encourages these crazy looks!!)

cheers!

my accidental pixie cut

let me first point out one weird thing about me:

i'm terrified of the hair stylist.

the only reason i don't go to get "trims" on my hair, is because it never turns out the way i want it to.  i haven't found "my go to" stylist, even after living in the same area for 4 years.  i never EVER walk away from the hair salon with that "omg my hair looks so awesome" feeling.  it's always a "gosh i hope i learn how to style this, i wonder what people at work will say, i need to spend the whole night messing with this" uneasy feeling.  i give no fault to the stylist, she's just doing her job, cutting my hair the way i say i want it cut.

i went in for a haircut just before barbados hoping to look like this photo of victoria beckham:

...that obviously didn't happen.  i'm not a size zero, my hair's not blonde, and my hair was NOT that shape.  unfortunately I don't have a photo of my immediate "after" as i just desperately tried to work with what i had requested.  my hair was previously in an almost-shoulder-length bob, and she chopped one side so short there was no hair to go behind my ears, and she didn't even TOUCH the other side.  no shaping, no cutting of the split ends, nothing.  i guess that's what she saw in the photo.  i tried to deal, and i even wore it in a sort of pompadour the first night (and stole mr p's heart while at it... that boy loves his girl to have a short 'do)

the problem with this is that the "long" side of my hair had to be pinned back, it kept falling out, and it sort of looked like a mullet on that side (oh mullets, us pixie-cut vets know that the worst part of a pixie-cut is the mullet stages when it starts to grow out in the back)

...so, after that night i decided i needed another cut.  the problem is i decided i needed another cut after salons closed on sunday, we were leaving for barbados on tuesday morning, and hardly any salons are open on mondays. the ones that ARE open wanted to charge me full price for a women's cut ($70+) to chop just one side of my hair.  NO THANK YOU!! i already paid for a whole hair cut, i'm not spending another $70!! luckily i found a salon in Hoboken that would do it, and they only charged me for a men's cut (it's short like man hair, it should be priced like man hair anyways!!)

i was satisfied.  a few nit-picky things i wasn't happy with, but it was fine. i could deal.

barbados came and went, and i decided i still had this mullet thing going on in the back.  it stuck out in an unflattering way whenever i wore a coat or a scarf.  mr p is GREAT for cutting off the mullet of my short hair!  2 days of that, and i decided i needed more cut off.  so, he did it again.

SO... 4 haircuts later, i'm finally satisfied with my new accidental pixie cut!!

finally i love it!

now that I've documented how i like my hair to look, next time i go to the salon i can finally take in my OWN photo of my OWN hair, and hopefully i'll finally find a stylist who can cut it right... otherwise i'll have to sit in my bathroom, (trying not to) snap at mr p to cut it differently (guys, i let my BOYFRIEND cut my hair, there's bound to be a little hesitation, it never eases up no matter how many times i let him do it)

what do you guys think??

cheers.
